The letter
My girlfriend found a two-bedroom on the east side — real lease, August move-in, she's already claimed me a closet. We've been together over a year and I'm sure about her. But I lived with someone before, my ex from college, and I stopped knowing where he ended and I began. Took until well after the split to get myself back. Every time I try to say I need more time before we share a space, she goes quiet and pulls out her mother's verdict: we're not being serious. I've been letting her think my hesitation is about money, because "I'm afraid of disappearing inside someone I love" doesn't fit on a spreadsheet. I want at least another year in my own place. How do I tell her I'm sure about her and still not ready for this?
The Punisher replies
The problem isn't the apartment. You've been letting her solve the wrong equation, and that tab is running.
What happened with your ex was real. Coming out the other end of something and not recognizing yourself — that's memory, not weakness, and it's telling you what you need before you do this again. Pay attention to it.
But you have to say it. Not the money version. The real one: you lived with someone, you came out of it not knowing who you were, and you need another year in your own space before you risk that again. Those words, to her face.
I've put off more than a few hard conversations by feeding myself a cleaner version of the truth. Every one of them cost more than the conversation would have. So when I tell you this one's already running a tab, I'm not guessing.
Then you find out what you're actually dealing with. Because if she takes the real version and does what she does with the money version — goes quiet, pulls in her mother, shuts the door — that's not a timing problem. That's a different conversation and it needs a different name.

Captain America weighs in
Frank's right that the lie has to go. But he's reading her like a threat assessment — run the test, score the response, call it data. She's not a target. She's been trying to solve a problem you handed her the wrong answer to, for months. That's on you, not her.
Tell her what happened with your ex. Tell her you need the year. But tell her because she deserves to know, not to see how she handles it. There's a difference between giving someone the truth and giving them a test. Trust her to be a full person about it. That's the part Frank left out.
